Oliver Knussen Songs without Voices
Johann Strauss arr. Schoenberg Emperor Waltz
The second
concert in our Britten Sinfonia at Lunch series focuses on Oliver Knussen,
featuring his poignant and touching Songs without Voices, composed in
memory of the composer Andrzej Panufnik, while the new work is by Ryan
Wigglesworth who has been greatly influenced by Knussen, having benefited
from his tutelage early in his career. Wigglesworth’s 2004 début
at Wigmore Hall received great critical acclaim and his works are now
played in concert halls around the country. The programme ends with Schoenberg’s
witty and riotous arrangement of Strauss’ Emperor Waltz.
‘To
me, real music is real music when you’re not sitting around thinking
it’s music – it actually takes you over.’ Oliver
Knussen
