Anyone who caught Dominique Le Gendre's original short opera Bird of Night
may be wondering what happened next to Apolline, the child who wanted
to harness mystical powers to fly. Some of the answers are about to emerge
in this new full-length commission by The Royal Opera, that takes its
cue from that 20-minute project first seen in the ROH2's A NITRO at the
Opera.
Now, Paul
Bentley's libretto picks up the tale. Apolline has grown; she is a teenager
and eager to try to fly again. But meanings darken as new layers are revealed
that question Apolline's own origins and the intentions of a family she
thought she knew: just who are her real mother and her father, and what
part will her godmother's special powers play in the violent climax?
The story
is pervaded by the supernatural influences of Caribbean mythology - both
good and evil - and set with the translucence and fluidity of Le Gendre's
appealing musical voice. Royal Opera singers, the Britten Sinfonia and
a staging that explores the story's metaphors of flight will launch this
new work - and it will be a pleasure to see it soar!
