Bach Concerto in D minor for Oboe, Violin and String Orchestra
BWV 1060
A varied
but irresistible rhythmic impulse drives through this programme, from
the vivacious energy of Vivaldi’s Venice, to the mesmeric but often
wistful tangos of Piazzolla and Golijov’s Argentina. The characteristic
rhythmic angularity of Stravinsky’s music is evident in his Concerto
for String Orchestra that has inspired numerous choreographers to turn
it into ballet music, while the Purcell/Britten chacony, with its insistent
triple-time beat, is quite simply majestic dance music.
The scintillating
oboe-playing of Nicholas Daniel matches the sparkling character of the
Vivaldi oboe concerto – like sunlight playing on a Venetian lagoon
– while for Bach’s beautiful double concerto for oboe and
violin, he is joined by Britten Sinfonia’s leader Jacqueline Shave.
