Webern Five Movements
Haydn Symphony No. 88 in G
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor*
A mere 120 years separate the works on this programme, but what different worlds they inhabit. Haydn’s ever-popular Symphony and Beethoven’s shimmering Piano Concerto exemplify the stylish essence of High Classicism – with Britten Sinfonia favourite and Beethoven specialist Imogen Cooper showing her mettle. Fast forward to 1909, a time of developing tonalities, where we witness Webern’s landmark Five Movements, following in the footsteps of the Venetian school of composers.
‘Her performance was impressive for its episodes of restraint and pensiveness...wondrously delicate and, when called for, steely and incisive.’ The New York Times
