Britten Movement for Wind Sextet
Mozart Quintet for Piano and Wind
The brilliance
of Mozart’s music for winds is encapsulated in his piano quintet,
making a virtue of the instruments’ disparate sound qualities in
writing that is both dashingly soloistic and richly homogenous. Add a
true bass instrument – a bass clarinet – to the ensemble,
as Woolrich, Janácek and Britten have done – and this undervalued
instrumental combination shines still brighter. Janácek’s
sextet celebrates youth and childhood memories and shares the programme
with an appropriately youthful work from Benjamin Britten, completed in
his 17th year.
