Alec Roth The Traveller (world première tour)

The Traveller is the third piece in a unique four-year commission from writer Vikram Seth and composer Alec Roth – a collaboration described by The Times as ‘the Rolls and Royce of the arts world’.  This new work, scored for violin, tenor, chorus and orchestra, takes its literary inspiration from India. In addition to writing six new poems, Vikram Seth will translate more than twenty Indian texts from a rich variety of sources to create a work themed on the ages of man.

The first half of the programme builds on this notion of the ages of man, beginnings and endings, birth and death. Dies Natalis, a cantata for tenor and strings, sets out to depict a newborn child’s first sensations of the world in a work that is richly textured and melodic, whilst Ysaÿe’s Second Sonata for solo violin, one of a set of six composed in 1924, after the death of his wife, in honour of J.S. Bach, weaving the portentous Dies Irae motif into the fabric of its four movements.
